UN Pushing Internet Censorship Under UN and Chinese Control

If there was ever an indicator of the uselessness of the UN, their latest move to censor free speech, to set up mechanisms with China and Russia leading to censor worldwide free speech on the internet, this should reinforce this belief.

The General Assembly approved the resolution sponsored by Russia and backed by China, which would set up a committee of international experts in 2020.

The panel will work to set up “a comprehensive international convention on countering the use of information and communications technologies for criminal purposes,” the resolution said.

European powers and the US, along with free speech groups, fear that the language of the agreement will give legitimacy for cracking down in numerous countries, where its criticism of the government is defined as a criminal act.

“It is precisely our fear that (a new convention) would allow the codification at an international and global level of these types of controls that are driving our opposition and our concerns about this resolution,” a US official said.

Human Rights Watch called the UN resolution’s list of sponsors “a rogue’s gallery of some of the earth’s most repressive governments.”

“If the plan is to develop a convention that gives countries legal cover for internet blackouts and censorship while creating the potential for criminalizing free speech, then it’s a bad idea,” said Human Rights Watch’s Louis Charbonneau.

What is more alarming is not what the UN is doing. Still, companies like Google are working on setting up search engines that will work as China, not the West demands, where specific searches will be cut off due to criticism against China’s government or policies.

Google has put in a new app; the app would reportedly comply with China’s expansive censorship requirements by automatically identifying and filtering sites blocked by the Great Firewall, China’s internet filtering system.

I find it amazing that these big tech companies are so quick to censor conservative thought, but then bow down to pressure from the Chinese to give in to their oppressive ideology.

We are currently at a crossroads, one where the Western ideology of free speech and expression is seen as a sacred right of all versus China’s worldwide influence where human freedom takes second place to the control of the all-powerful central government.

Sadly, the UN used to be the leader of freedom, spreading Western Thought, no longer, it is now beholding to dictatorships and communist ideology. Increasingly we see this then trickle down to our colleges and be reinforced with our youth in the West.

It is time we not only look at the mission of the UN, but we need to look at its usefulness as an institution. Today it is run by tyrants, hypocrisy abounds, where tyrannical nations sit on human rights pannels and lecture Western Nations on human rights while none are given at home.

Our last president wanted to bow to the UN; thankfully we have one now that finds our ideology and political stance as above the power of the UN to attack, it is up to us to demand that our leaders continue to hold to this ideology.
